Developments

We are working through a programme of modernising the waste and recycling facilities throughout Surrey to help process waste more effectively and provide a more efficient service to residents.

Since the start of the contract, we have redeveloped ten of the fifteen community recycling centres to provide Surrey residents with modern, accessible and convenient facilities.

Currently in progress

Slyfield community recycling centre and transfer station

Plans are in development to look at relocating and developing the site at Slyfield Industrial Estate in Guildford. The existing facility currently includes a community recycling centre and waste transfer station on a small and busy site. Proposals for the new development suggest relocating both facilities to a new site on the industrial estate to provide a larger waste transfer station, with a separately-accessed community recycling centre and a Revive re-use shop for local residents. This would improve the amenity for local residents and businesses, and reduce waiting times.

Completed developments

Here are some of the redevelopment projects we have completed on behalf of Surrey County Council.

Surrey Eco Park

The Eco Park is a brand new facility comprising of a community recycling centre, recyclables bulking facility, anaerobic digestion plant and a gasification treatment facility. The site, near Shepperton in North Surrey, is our busiest site. Read more about the Eco Park here.

Earlswood materials bulking facility

Working with Surrey County Council and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, we improved and extended the municipal depot on the A23 at Earlswood and built a materials bulking facility.

The facility comprises an enclosed building with outside bays for storing garden waste and street sweepings. Waste collection vehicles bring recyclable materials, food waste and general waste from households in Reigate, Banstead and Tandridge. We bulk the waste into larger loads before it’s transported off site for recycling, energy recovery or disposal. No processing or treatment takes place at the Earlswood site, and waste is usually moved on within a couple of days.

Leatherhead community recycling centre

We redeveloped the community recycling centre and transfer station to make it more modern, accessible and easy-to-use.

Upgrades included:

  • Better parking and road layout to reduce queuing and help people move around the site more easily.
  • Separate entrances for public vehicles and site service vehicles to help reduce congestion.
  • Separate drop-off area for garden waste that’s delivered in trailers.

Witley community recycling centre

We redeveloped and extended the community recycling centre to make it more modern, accessible and convenient. The year after the completion of the project, the site won the prestigious ‘Civic Amenity of the Year 2013’ award by industry body letsrecycle.com

Upgrades included:

  • Better parking and road layout to reduce queueing and help people move around the site more easily.
  • Separate entrance and exit to help reduce congestion. Residents now enter the improved site via Rake Lane instead of Petwork Road.
  • A split-level site to remove the need for steps.
